Time of day to film notes
We decided to film our main opening title sequence in the afternoon when the sun is high, you can get many shots as you are just using natural daylight and nothing used such as candles or torches. On the day we filmed, it was also a very horrible, cold, cloudy day and the sky was pretty dark for the early afternoon. Filming later on in the year is much harder as it doesn't stay light for that long as the sun goes down early at 4 pm. After this main scene in the churchdown park, we went to Chloe's house to film the rest of the OTS; this was in her kitchen being surrounded by the darkness from outside and the candles surrounding the young, innocent girl having a tea party with the lifeless victorian doll.
dAY
Filming in natural daylight is really good for the start of an opening title sequence, if you are travelling to a forest in the natural daylight, it doesn't seem that scary as if you were travelling in the pitch black. This is why most horror films are portrayed at night as it is more scary and you can't see what's happening. We did not decide to use this for the main scenes, but we did decide to use it for the titles on the concrete written in chalk. Being able to see the titles purely from natural light is easier to add effects and anything else you would like to add.
aFTERNOON
This is our time of day we decided to film throughout the whole opening title sequence. This was the right level of consistency needed to see 'Ashleigh' and the doll in the forest and park. Any darker would make it too obvious that something was going to happen.
eVENING
We stayed away from this time of day as we had no scenes that could relate to it. For example, if you were walking down the street past a streetlight, then this would be perfect. Unfortunately, in our OTS as we used Ashleigh - she's a young girl, and why would a child be in the park in the mid-darkness? It wouldn't make it seem realistic as this never happens.
CONCLUSION
Overall, we used 2 out of the 4 time periods we could of used. Daylight for the titles on the concrete, afternoon for ashleigh exploring the woods and playing on the swings. We decided that these times of day would be best as the daylight made the audience feel like nothing bad was going to happen, this fit in with the location, a park, which could also be associated with safety.
